Search for CS2 free cases and you get long lists of sites, each promising something for nothing. Free cases do exist, but almost all of them are a sign-up incentive with conditions attached. This guide explains what those conditions are, how to work out what a free case is actually worth, and where Valve's own free drop fits in.
What free cases really are
On third-party case sites, "free case" covers a few different things:
- Promo code cases. Entering a creator or referral code gives you one or a few cases, or a small balance to open one. Often you must deposit first, or link a Steam account above a certain level.
- Level-gated daily cases. A case you can open once a day, where the contents improve as your site level rises. Site level usually goes up with how much you wager, so the better cases are paid for in wagering.
- Deposit-gated cases. A case unlocked by depositing a minimum amount, sometimes inside a time window.
- Event and giveaway cases. Cases handed out during promotions, often with the same gates.
The common thread is that winnings from a free case are frequently locked: you may need to wager them, deposit before withdrawing, or reach a minimum withdrawal amount that the case alone will not cover.
How to value a free case
Use expected value (EV): multiply each item's chance by its value and add the results. Here is a made-up low-tier free case:
| Item | Chance | Value | Chance × value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common item | 90% | $0.05 | $0.045 |
| Mid item | 9% | $0.50 | $0.045 |
| Top item | 1% | $5.00 | $0.05 |
The EV is $0.045 + $0.045 + $0.05 = $0.14. Nine times in ten you get five cents.
Now add the conditions. Two examples:
- Wagering. Suppose you must wager $20 on games with a 4% house edge before you can withdraw. The expected cost of that wagering is $20 × 0.04 = $0.80, more than five times the $0.14 the case is worth.
- Minimum withdrawal. If the site's minimum withdrawal is higher than what you won, the item is stuck unless you deposit and play more, which is the point of the offer.
A free case is only worth taking if you were going to use that site anyway and the conditions cost you nothing extra. The same logic applies to deposit bonuses: our bonus rollover calculator shows the expected cost of a wagering requirement, and the case opening guide covers the EV maths for paid cases.
Terms to check
- Does the case need a deposit first? How much, and within what time?
- Is there a Steam level, account age, public profile or email requirement?
- Do free case winnings need to be wagered before withdrawal, and how many times?
- What is the minimum withdrawal, and can you withdraw a single low-value skin?
- Is the code permanent once claimed? Some sites lock you to the first creator code you enter.
- Is the site available where you live? Many block whole countries, so read the restricted list before you sign up.
- Does the case page list every item with its odds, and do they add up to 100%?
Why not to sign up everywhere
Some guides tell you to register on every site and claim every free case. We do not recommend it. Each account means handing over your Steam profile, often an email and sometimes ID documents, to another operator, several of which publish no gambling license. Each one will then market deposits to you. And the expected value of the cases themselves is a few cents each.
If you want to try case opening, pick one site, check its terms against the list above, set a budget you are happy to lose, and stop when it is gone.
Valve's free weekly drop
The one free case with no gambling attached comes from Valve. Players with Prime Status get a weekly care package the first time they level up in a week (each level takes 5,000 XP). The package offers four items and you keep two. One of the four is always a case from the active drop pool; the others can be a weapon skin, graffiti or a sticker capsule. The drop resets once a week, around Tuesday night or early Wednesday depending on your time zone.
You still need a key to open the case, or you can sell the case itself on the Steam Market. Our guide on how to get cases in CS2 covers drops, buying and trading.
Partner sites with free case offers
These partners either list a case in the offer our link or code was reported to give, or run a free daily case. Offers change often. Check the live terms, including any deposit, level or wagering condition, before you claim.
