Premier is CS2's main ranked mode: 5v5 on the Active Duty maps, with one public CS Rating and global and regional leaderboards. It stays greyed out on new accounts until you clear two requirements, and then your rating stays hidden until you win enough matches. Here is the full path as of October 2026.
The requirements
- Prime Status. A one-time purchase, $14.99 on the US Steam store. Without Prime, an account earns no XP, no ranks and no drops, so it can never reach the level requirement. Steam lists Prime as not eligible for a refund.
- Profile level 10. Your profile level (the rank shown on your profile, from 1 to 40) has to reach 10. Each level takes 5,000 XP.
That is all you need for the queue to open. Your CS Rating is a separate step that comes after it.
Reaching level 10
XP comes from playing official Valve modes such as Competitive, Wingman, Casual, Deathmatch and Arms Race. A few things help:
- The weekly XP bonus. Your first XP each week is multiplied, and the bonus shrinks as you earn more. Playing a few sessions every week is faster than one long weekend.
- Weekly missions. Since May 2025 you get one mission a week, and completing it pays bonus XP.
- Your first level-up each week also unlocks the Weekly Care Package. Our guide to getting cases explains what is in it.
Do not buy a ready-made level 10 account. Bought accounts break Steam's rules and are an easy way to lose the money and the account.
Your first 10 wins
Once Premier opens, the game hides your CS Rating until you have won 10 Premier matches. Only wins count. Valve uses the same rule at the start of each season, when everyone has to re-establish their rating with ten wins.
Two party rules matter here. Players with a very high established rating cannot queue with accounts that have no rating yet. And players whose ratings are too far apart cannot party together. If a friend cannot invite you, this is usually why.
How a Premier match works
- Format: 5v5, up to 24 rounds in regulation (first to 13), with 6-round overtime if it is tied at 12-12. Competitive uses the same round count.
- Map pool: the seven Active Duty maps. Since Season Five (July 8, 2026) these are Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage and Nuke. Cache replaced Overpass.
- Map selection: since September 22, 2026 the first team picks one map, the second team picks two, and the first team picks a final one. One of the four is then drawn at random. Before that update, teams banned maps until one was left.
The new system means you get some say over the map without vetoing your opponent's best one. Pro matches still use their own veto. Our map veto guide explains how that works.
Premier vs Competitive
Both are ranked 5v5 modes with the same round format, but they rank you differently.
| Premier | Competitive | |
|---|---|---|
| Maps | Active Duty pool only | You choose maps, including some outside Active Duty |
| Map choice | Teams pick four maps, one is drawn at random | Set before you queue |
| Rank shown | One CS Rating number | A Skill Group for each map |
| To reveal it | 10 Premier wins | 2 wins on that map |
| Leaderboards | Global and regional | None |
| Season medal | Yes, for 25 wins | No |
Competitive keeps the old CS:GO Skill Group badges, from Silver I to The Global Elite, but you hold a separate one on each map. Valve reset those per-map Skill Groups in January 2026, so a returning player has to win on each map again to see them. Our CS2 ranks guide lists every Skill Group and CS Rating tier.
Seasons and medals
Premier runs in seasons. Season Five started on July 8, 2026. To earn a season medal you need an account in good standing, 25 Premier wins during the season and an active CS Rating when it ends. The medal's color matches the highest rating you reached, and it gets one bar for every 25 wins, up to five bars.
If Premier is still locked
- Check that Prime shows on your account in the game. A purchase on another Steam account does not carry over.
- Check your profile level in the main menu. It has to be 10 or higher, not just close.
- Look for a matchmaking cooldown. Abandons and team damage can block ranked queues for a while, whatever your level.
Prefer smaller matches while you level up? Our Wingman guide covers the 2v2 mode, which also earns XP.
